Got to take the power back!

Every night in the wintertime, I take my walk along the road, trying to get my body in shape. As I do my walking there in the dark, my mind goes everywhere. Sometimes I look at the stars and take a journey to experience the life out there (if there is any at all). Another walk, I compose a new song for my band. One of these nights, walking there all alone, I was thinking: “So quiet!” No sounds but a train longing for its end station. No sound of children playing out in the snow. Only the monotone sound my footsteps were making mixed with the sound of the running train in the distance. Some years ago, walking along the road, I could hear and watch children out in the playground, making fun playing all of their games. Often, I could watch them all, along with their parents playing the games as well. Out there in the winter night, with the moon and the stars above we could say hello to each others, make conversations with our neighbors, and exchange information. Where are they now? Where have they gone? Where are they hiding, making no noise?

  1. Hi :-)
I agree with you - walking hels contemplation.
And I see you've already begun multimodal discourse in your blog (I mean manoeuvring between various modes of communication to build the message). Interesting and enjoyable:-)

  2. Hi there! Interesting thoughts you have my friend. I totally agree with you, WHERE did they go. Last summer we experienced a couple of weeks with beautiful weather an the temperature was a soaring 26-27 degrees centigrade. I found myself sitting in my front yard thinking similar thoughts sa you,, where are all the kids?? In my neighborhood there are approximately 6-7 kids in the age 8-14 years old, and here I found myself utterly alone in the great outdoors on such a magnificcent afternoon.

  3. Hi Kjell Arne!
Yes I agree, you definetly bring up one important aspect of the childrens childhood today. I think that some of the children you speak of, are sitting inside living their virtual life through their computers. Children today have two lives, the real one and the virtual one. Let's face it, we are getting old and the virual sphere has become the new domain for the childrens playground.

  4. Hi again :-)

I would say that not only children tend to live "numerous lives" today. An interesting question is "Why is it so?" Is it only because of technical possiblilities new media give to us (e.g. virtual worlds)? Maybe there's something more to it? I'd be happy to discuss with you the concept of hiperreality (maybe also real virtuality (?). You'll find introduction to it in "Media Culture - chosen aspects"
